Juliette ha 17 anni e il potere di fulminare chiunque tocchi. A causa di questo è stata rinchiusa in un manicomio per volere della Restaurazione, il movimento che ha preso il potere illudendo la gente di poter riportare il mondo agonizzante al suo primitivo splendore. Dopo 264 giorni di isolamento le viene assegnato un compagno di cella, Adam, che lei riconosce come l’unico compagno di scuola che non l’ha mai trattata alla stregua di un mostro. Adam però è un soldato al servizio di Warner, figlio del comandante supremo della Restaurazione, che intende sfruttare il potere di Juliette per torturare e uccidere gli oppositori del regime. Ma Juliette e Adam, il quale scopre di essere immune al tocco letale di lei, si innamorano e decidono di fuggire insieme e unirsi a un gruppo di ribelli. Riuscirà Juliette a sfuggire al controllo di Warner e alle mire della Restaurazione?

Ragazzi non immaginavo. Io proprio non immaginavo che questo libro che esiste da anniii, e che io sto leggendo solo ora per la prima volta, mi sarebbe piaciuto così tanto. Ma tanto davvero. Mi prenderei a pugni da sola perché fino all’anno scorso ero: “no, non mi ispira, non mi piace bla bla bla” lasciatemi stare, ero stupida l’anno scorso.

Quest’anno ho deciso di darmi una regolata e recuperare questo gioiello. Shatter Me ci propone lo scenario di un mondo che sta cadendo a pezzi a causa dell’uomo, uno scenario piuttosto attuale direi. In questa situazione critica, in cui gli animali stanno scomparendo, gli uccelli non volano più, il cibo scarseggia e il meteo è ballerino (vi suona familiare?) la Restaurazione, un movimento politico, si è fatto avanti proponendosi come soluzione al problema. Chiaramente “la soluzione” non è esattamente la migliore ipotesi. Parliamo dei nostri protagonisti.

Abbiamo Juliette, la nostra eroina diciassettenne, che ha un dono, o una maledizione dipende dal punto di vista. Un suo semplice tocco può portare alla morte. Per questo viene allontanata dalla sua famiglia (felice di togliersela di mezzo) e dalla società, per essere rinchiusa in una specie di manicomio per gente pazza. Ma lei non è pazza, è incredibilmente buona, e in un mondo corrotto, è davvero raro trovare un’anima gentile come quella di Juliette. Ma il suo dono ha una reputazione di tutt’altro avviso. L’ho trovata spettacolare. È solo una ragazzina, ma dimostra forza e volontà in un mondo che le è completamente avverso. Sopporta stoicamente di tutto e questa cosa mi ha fatta commuovere in più di un’occasione. Ogni scambio di battute con Warner mi ha fatto ridacchiare come una scema, ma come vedremo, questo è stato tutto merito di lui.

A fare compagnia nella sua cella, un giorno compare Adam, un ragazzo dagli occhi blu oceano. Un ragazzo che Juliette si ricordava di aver conosciuto, a scuola. Un ragazzo che all’inizio la tratta come se non la conoscesse, come se fosse pazza. Devo ammettere che il ruolo di Adam nella storia ha qualcosa di nebuloso. Non mi convince, non al 100%. Fino alla fine, nonostante tutto, non sono riuscita a togliermi di dosso la sensazione che lui stia nascondendo qualcosa di importante… vedremo nel seguito di questa storia.

E poi c’è lui. Il mio insta-love (non della protagonista). Ho un debole per i folli, che ci posso fare. È impulsivo, arrogante, sarcastico e completamente fuori di testa, ma un debole per Juliette. Sto parlando di Warner, nel caso non si fosse capito. 19 anni, poco più grande di Juliette, è al comando del Settore 45, e desidera Juliette in più di un modo. In primis come arma della Restaurazione, e poi come compagna, seppur il problema del tocco non è cosa da niente. E pretende anche che sia lei a scegliere di voler essere tutto ciò, non la vuole obbligare, ma non vuole avere un no come risposta. Capite? È completamente folle, ma lo adoro! (non normalizziamo queste cose nella vita reale, ma in un fantasy posso permettermelo).

“Non mi fai paura, mia cara” dice con dolcezza. “Mi incanti.”

“Voglio che tu mi scelga” dice. “Voglio che tu scelga di stare con me. Voglio che tu voglia tutto questo…”

Guys I couldn’t know. I just didn't know that this book that has existed for years, and that I have been reading only now for the first time, I would have liked it so much. But really, really liked. I would punch myself because until last year I was: "No, it doesn't inspire me, I don't like blah blah blah"… Leave me alone, I was stupid last year.

This year I decided to recover this jewel. Shatter me offers us the scenario of a world that is falling apart because of humanity, a rather current scenario, I would say. In this critical situation, in which the animals are disappearing, the birds no longer fly, food is scarce and the weather is unpredictable (sounds familiar?) The Reestablishment, a political movement, has been ahead by proposing itself as a solution to the problem. Clearly "the solution" is not exactly the best hypothesis. Let's talk about our main characters.

We have Juliette, our seventeen -year -old heroine, who has a gift, or a curse, depends from the point of view. A simple touch can lead to death. For this reason, she is removed from her family (happy to get her away) and society, to be locked up in a kind of asylum for insane people. But she is not insane, she is incredibly kind, and in a corrupt world, it is really rare to find a kind soul like Juliette’s. But her gift has a reputation of a completely different opinion. I found it spectacular. She is only a girl, but shows strength and will in a world that is completely adverse. Stoically stands out of everything and this thing made me cry on more than one occasion. The banter with Warner made me giggle, but as we will see, this was all thanks to him.

To keep company in his cell, one day Adam appears, a boy with blue ocean eyes. A boy that Juliette remembered she met at school. A guy who at the beginning didn’t recognize her, thought she was crazy. I must admit that the role of Adam in the plot has something nebulous. It does not convince me, not 100%. Until the end, despite everything, I was unable to take off the feeling that he is hiding something important… we will see.

And then there is him. My insta-love (not of the protagonist). I have a soft spot for the unhinged ones, I can’t help. He is impulsive, arrogant, sarcastic and completely out of mind, but has a thing for Juliette. I'm talking about Warner, if it was not clear. 19 years old, slightly older than Juliette, is in command of the Sector 45, and wants Juliette in more than one way. First of all, as a weapon of the Reestablishment, and then as his, although the problem of touch is not nothing. He also claims that she has to be the one who chooses she wants to be with him, he doesn't want to force her, but he doesn't want to have a no as an answer. Do you understand? It's completely out of mind, but I love him! (We don't normalize these things in real life, but in a fantasy world, I can afford it).

“I’m not afraid of you, my dear,” he says softly. “I’m absolutely enchanted.”

“I want you to choose me,” he says. “I want you to choose to be with me. I want you to want this--”
