Dalle piccole cittadine della Virginia alla sofisticata California, dai sobborghi di Boston ai campi del Texas, ogni anno si incontrano per misurarsi con i peggiori mostri del Paese. Quando finalmente l’attrazione a lungo sopita esplode e scocca la scintilla, il romance si tinge di sfumature horror. Perché Sloane e Rowan hanno seminato dietro di loro una cruenta scia di fantasmi pronti a reclamare vendetta. Riusciranno a uscire in tempo da questo gioco mortale?

Questo libro mi ha fatto morire dal ridere... Devo ammettere che la lista TW mi ha lasciato un po' perplessa: dovrei leggerlo? Non dovrei? Spoiler: l'ho letto ed è stato bello! Questa è una commedia romantica dark: un po' dark, molto commedia e una bella storia d'amore. La mia parte preferita è stata quella con il cannibalismo accidentale: credo di non aver mai riso così tanto. Stavo letteralmente piangendo dalle risate.

La cosa che mi è piaciuta di più, tuttavia, è che Rowan, il nostro protagonista maschile, è un fottuto killer. E un fidanzato golden retriever. Lui si innamora per primo e fa tutto ciò che è in suo potere per provare a stare con lei. Come amico, se ne avesse bisogno; come amante, perché entrambi sono stupendi e attratti l'uno dall'altra; come fidanzato, se è abbastanza fortunato. È uno slow burn, ci vogliono 4 anni per un bacio. Ma dal momento in cui comincia lo smut, il libro si trasforma in un incendio! Rowan è così hot e provocante! La sua bocca, ragazzi... non ci potete credere.

“Hai presente la donna che stavi spiando?”

Aumento la presa sulla gola e lui annuisce disperato.

“Lei è mia.”

“Ucciderei per te, e l’ho fatto. Lo rifarei ogni maledetto giorno. Farei qualunque cosa per te. Perfino morire. Non è che mi piaci soltanto, Sloane, e lo sai!”

Sloane è una donna forte, con un sacco di insicurezze. È una serial killer che uccide altri serial killer. Quanto è poetico? Ma è anche fragile, ha bisogno di qualcuno che riesca a capire i suoi istinti, e la sua migliore amica Lark non è abbastanza. È speciale per Sloane, ma non abbastanza. È anche competitiva, ed è per questo che accetta di gareggiare per un omicidio ogni anno ad agosto, come competizione con Rowan. Romantico, vero?

“Ho bisogno di sapere perché non è possibile amarmi.”

Più in generale, ho trovato questo libro davvero divertente, buffo, romantico e davvero, davvero piccante. Santo cielo, il “piccante” lì dentro! Il modo di parlare di Rowan… sono persino arrossita! È stato un piacere leggerlo, ed è qualcosa a cui non mi ero ancora approcciata. Sono curiosa di leggere il secondo, penso che Lark sia più tosta di quanto sia intuibile da questo primo libro... e dal capitolo bonus su di lei e Lachlan!! (Di solito odio i punti esclamativi, ma questa volta ne ho bisogno). Lachlan potrebbe essere persino più esilarante di suo fratello, non vedo l'ora! L'ho appena ordinato.

This book had me laugh so hard… I have to admit that the TW list left me a little in confusion: should I read this? Shouldn’t? Spoiler: I read it and it was soooo good! This is a dark comedy romance, a little dark, a lot comedy and a pretty good romance. My favourite part was the one with the accidental cannibalism: I think I’ve never laughed that much ever. I was literally crying for laughing.

The thing I truly liked the most, however, was that Rowan, our MMC, is a deadly fucking killer AND a golden retriever boyfriend. He fells first, and he does everything in his power to try to be with her. As a friend, if she needed it; as a lover, because both of them are stunning and attracted to each other; as a boyfriend, if he is lucky. It’s a slow burn, it takes 4 years to get a kiss. But when the smut begins, then the book turns in a fire! Rowan is so hot and filthy! His mouth, guys… you cannot believe it.  

“That woman you were watching…?”

My fingers tighten around his throat as he desperately nods.

“She is mine.”

“I would kill for you, and I have. I would do it again, every damn day. I’d turn myself inside out for you. I would die for you. I don’t just like you, Sloane, and you fucking know it.”

Sloane is a strong woman, with lots of insecurities. She’s a serial killer who kills other serial killers. How poetic. But she’s fragile too, she needs someone who can understand her instincts, and her best friend Lark is not enough. She is special for Sloane, but not enough. She’s also competitive, and this is why she agrees to a murder every year in august, as a competition with Rowan. This is so romantic, isn’t it?

“I need to know why I’m unlovable.”

More in general, I found this book really entertaining, funny, romantic and really, really spicy. Dear lord, the spice in there! That mouth of Rowan, I even blushed! It was a pleasure reading it, and it was something I did not approach with yet. I am curious to read the second one, I think Lark is more badass that we can understand from this first book… and the bonus chapter about her and Lachlan!! (I usually hate exclamation marks, but I need them this time). Lachlan may be even more hilarious than his brother, I can’t wait! Just ordered.
