Il mondo, per Rossella Dragna, ha sempre avuto i confini della minuscola isola dove vive insieme alla sorella Tella e al potente, crudele padre. Se ha sopportato questi anni di forzato esilio è stato grazie al sogno di partecipare a Caraval, uno spettacolo itinerante misterioso quanto leggendario in cui il pubblico partecipa attivamente; purtroppo, l'imminente, combinato matrimonio a cui il padre la sta costringendo significa la rinuncia anche a quella possibilità di fuga. E invece Rossella riceve il tanto desiderato invito, e con l'aiuto di un misterioso marinaio, insieme a Tella fugge dall'isola e dal suo destino… Appena arrivate a Caraval, però, Tella viene rapita da Legend, il direttore dello spettacolo che nessuno ha mai incontrato: Rossella scopre in fretta che l'edizione di Caraval che sta per iniziare ruota tutta intorno alla sorella, e che ritrovarla è lo scopo ultimo del gioco, non solo suo, ma di tutti i fortunati partecipanti. Tutto ciò che accade in Caraval sono solo trucchi ed illusioni, questo ha sempre sentito dire Rossella. Eppure, sogno e veglia iniziano a confondersi e negare la magia diventa impossibile. Ma che sia realtà o finzione poco conta: Rossella ha cinque notti per ritrovare Tella, e intanto deve evitare di innescare un pericoloso effetto domino che la porterebbe a perderla per sempre…

Dunque, cosa penso di questo romanzo? Si classifica come un fantasy, ma è un genere di cui non avevo ancora mai letto. Una bella boccata d’aria. Sono abituata a leggere di fae, vampiri, demoni, licantropi… ma di un circo, un’isola magica in cui degli artisti recitano, degli spettatori osservano e i giocatori nel frattempo devono risolvere un mistero, ancora non avevo sentito parlare. So che la serie di Caraval non è nuova, ma questo è stato il mio primo approccio con questo mondo creato da Stephanie Garber, un mondo che sorprendentemente ho adorato e di cui adesso non penso di riuscire a fare a meno. Non me lo aspettavo, e sono davvero felice di aver fatto un acquisto impulsivo e aver comprato l’intera serie e lo spin-off. Questo primo libro è stato incredibilmente scorrevole, appassionante, sensuale, seppur la storia d’amore piuttosto platonica, romantico; un mistery non banale e un sistema magico nuovo e intrecciato. Che ve devo di’?

Gli unici punti che mi sento di criticare, riguardano il personaggio di Rossella. Innanzitutto perché cavolo hanno tradotto il nome? Cosa c’era di male nel nome Scarlett, vero nome della protagonista? Quando ho cercato delle immagini su pinterest per figurarmi i protagonisti, non riuscivo a capire per quale motivo non trovassi nulla: solo immagini di una certa Scarlett. Mi era venuto il panico perché pensavo che alla fine Julian non si mettesse con Rossella, poi ho capito che il problema era del traduttore che ha pensato bene di cambiare il nome di una sola delle protagoniste, e lasciare gli altri invariati.

In secondo luogo, mi sento di criticare leggermente il carattere di Rossella: troppo spaventata, troppo conservatrice, troppo ossessionata dalla sorella. Per carità, aveva le sue ragioni, ma che cavolo! Avrei solo voluto che fosse un po’ meno damigella in pericolo… tutto qua.

Donatella ha subìto uno switch nella mia mente: da personaggio che non mi piaceva granché perché (al contrario della sorella) fin troppo impulsiva e sciocca, a una donna intelligente, furba e molto coraggiosa… e un po’ folle, ma questo non guasta. Tristemente, questo l’ho capito solo alla fine. Nel corso di questo libro non la si vede quasi di niente, ma è sempre presente, sempre nella bocca di Rossella. Al centro di ogni suo pensiero.  

Julian. Oh Julian. Di lui mi son innamorata un gesto alla volta, I can relate Rossella on that. La barca, il finto fidanzamento, il giorno di vita e l’incontro con il padre. E tanti altri gesti che di volta in volta hanno avvicinato i due fino alla rivelazione dei loro sentimenti. Mi è piaciuto proprio tanto. Anche se è stato scioccante venire a sapere del suo ruolo in Caraval e nello spettacolo.

Attualmente sono in lettura del secondo, e per quanto mi manchi Julian, sono curiosissima di scoprire in quale guaio si sia cacciata Donatella. Perché nel primo libro ha tentato un azzardo enorme, ma questo potrebbe essere perfino più pericoloso della morte. Mi sto mettendo curiosità da sola, potete crederci? Vado a leggere. Voi divertitevi, e fatemi sapere cosa ne pensate!

When the sisters' long-awaited invitations to Caraval finally arrive, it seems their dreams have come true. But no sooner have they arrived than Tella vanishes, kidnapped by the show's mastermind organiser, Legend. Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But nonetheless she quickly becomes enmeshed in a dangerous game of love, magic and heartbreak. And real or not, she must find Tella before the game is over, and her sister disappears forever.

So, what do I think of this novel? It is classified as a fantasy, but it is a genre that I had never read before. A breath of fresh air. I am used to reading about fae, vampires, demons, werewolves... but I had not yet heard of a circus, a magical island where artists perform, spectators observe and the players in the meantime must solve a mystery. I know that the Caraval series is not new, but this was my first approach to this world created by Stephanie Garber, a world that I surprisingly loved and that now I do not think I can do without. I did not expect it, and I am really happy to have made an impulsive purchase and bought the entire series and the spin-off. This first book was incredibly smooth, exciting, sensual, even if the love story was rather platonic, romantic; a non-trivial mystery and a new and intertwined magic system. What can I say?

The only points that I feel like criticizing, concern the character of Scarlett. First of all, why the hell did they translate the name in Italian? Rossella? What was wrong with the name Scarlett, the real name of the protagonist? When I looked for images on Pinterest to imagine the main characters, I didn’t understand why I couldn't find anything: only images of a certain Scarlett (in Italian she is Rossella, as I said). I panicked because I thought that Julian wouldn't end up with Rossella, then I realized that the problem was with the translator who thought it was a good idea to change the name of only one of the characters, and leave the others unchanged.

Secondly, I feel like criticizing Scarlett’s character a little: too scared, too conservative, too obsessed with her sister. Of course, she had her reasons, but what the hell! I just wish she was a little less of a damsel in distress... that's all.

Donatella had a switch in my mind: from a character I didn't like much because (unlike her sister) she was too impulsive and silly, to an intelligent, smart and very brave woman... and a little crazy, but that doesn't hurt. Sadly, I only realized that at the end. During this book you hardly see her at all, but she is always present, always in Scarlett’s mouth. The point of her every thought.

Julian. Oh Julian. I fell in love with him one gesture at a time, I can relate Scarlett on that. The boat, the fake engagement, the day of life and the fight with her father. And so many other gestures that from time to time brought both of them closer until the revelation of their feelings. I really liked it. Even if it was shocking to learn about his role in Caraval and in the show.

I'm currently reading the second one, and as much as I miss Julian, I'm very curious to find out what trouble Donatella got herself into. Because in the first book she took a huge gamble, but this could be even more dangerous than death. I'm making myself curious, can you believe it? I'm going to read.
